Trane AC and heat pump age by serial number

Trane air conditioners and heat pumps have carried their manufacture date in the serial number since 1983. There are 3 formats in the field; type yours and the decoder works out which one it is. Or read how the code works below and do it by hand.

The same code covers American Standard and Ameristar.

Where is my serial number?

Example: Trane heat pump, serial 16363W754F

Made Late August or early September 2016

10 years, 1 month old

The serial reads as week 36 of 2016 (2010 to today format). Made, not installed: most units go in within a year of the factory date.

In the replacement window

A heat pump (air-source, ducted) typically lasts 10 to 15 years, and this one is in that range. It may keep going, but this is the age to budget for a replacement rather than wait for it to fail.

How Trane serial numbers encode the date

3 formats are in the field. Each one below shows where the date sits; the decoder tries them all.

2010 to today

Ten characters starting with four digits. The first two digits are the year, the next two the week of the year, and the fifth digit the day of the week. Most labels from this era also print the manufacture month next to the model name.

Example: 16363W754F, made Late August or early September 2016.

2002 to 2009

Nine characters starting with a digit. The first digit is the last digit of the year (2 is 2002, 9 is 2009), the next two digits are the week of the year and the fourth digit is the day of the week.

Example: 7343YAU5G, made Late August 2007.

1983 to 2001

Nine characters starting with a letter. The letter is the year from Trane's own table: W, X and Y are 1983 to 1985, S is 1986, B through H run 1987 to 1993, J through N run 1994 to 1998, P is 1999, R is 2000 and Z is 2001. The next two digits are the week of the year and the digit after them the day of the week.

Example: K374TXHBF, made Early September 1995.

Where the serial is on Trane ACs and heat pumps

On the rating plate on the outdoor unit's side panel, usually the corner panel by the electrical box and refrigerant lines. Packaged units carry it on the panel beside the service access.

Use the serial number, not the model number: only the serial carries the date.

Brands that use the same date code

These brands are made by Trane Technologies and share the serial format, so the same rule decodes them. Who makes which brand.

How long Trane air conditioners and heat pumps last

A central air conditioner typically lasts 10 to 15 years. Brand matters less than installation, maintenance and water or air conditions, so the same range applies to Trane.

Signs it's time to plan a replacement

  • It is more than 10 years old.
  • Breakdowns are frequent, or a repair approaches half the cost of a new system.
  • Energy bills keep climbing with no change in use.
  • Uneven cooling or loud noises.
  • It uses R-22. New R-22 hasn't been made or imported in the U.S. since 2020, so recharges rely on recovered refrigerant.

Common questions

Can I get the age of a Trane AC or heat pump from the model number?

No. The model number describes the unit (its series, size and efficiency). The manufacture date is in the serial number, which is printed on the same plate.

Is the decoded date when it was made or when it was installed?

When it was made. Most units are installed within a year of their factory date, but one that sat in a warehouse or was installed later can be younger in service than the date suggests.

Do Trane furnaces use the same date code?

Yes. Trane furnaces carry the same serial format, so the same rule decodes them.

Does this work for a Trane heat pump?

Yes. Trane heat pumps use the same serial format as its air conditioners, so the decoder reads them the same way.

Who makes Trane air conditioners and heat pumps?

Trane's own brand. American Standard Companies owned Trane from 1984, Ingersoll Rand bought it in 2008, and the business has been Trane Technologies since 2020.

Did your serial decode wrong, or not at all?

Send it with the brand and equipment type. Every submission is checked by hand and, once resolved, becomes a test the decoder must pass.

Email the serial number, the brand, and whether it's a water heater, furnace, AC or boiler to support@factorydate.com.

If the label prints a manufacture date, include it: that's what lets us confirm a new format. A photo of the plate helps too.
